Asthma

How does Ketomar Syrup work?

Ketomar works by blocking the release of certain chemical messengers that cause inflammation and muscle spasms in the airways, reducing symptoms of asthma and allergies.

Side Effects of Ketomar Syrup

Drowsiness, dry mouth, slight dizziness (usually subside after a few days).

Quick Suggestions:

• Ketotifen oral (tablet or syrup) takes about 2-4 hours to work and lasts up to 22 hours
• Ketomar Syrup may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.
• Ketotifen can cause weight gain, can make you sleepy and drowsy

Ketomar is prescribed for the following conditions:

• Prophylactic treatment of bronchial asthma
• Symptomatic treatment of allergic conditions, including rhinitis and conjunctivitis
• Alleviation of itching, pain, and tenderness associated with neurofibroma
• Symptomatic treatment of allergies such as hay fever and urticaria

Pharmacology

Ketotifen, the active ingredient in Ketomar, possesses anti-allergic and antihistamine properties. It is effective in preventing asthma attacks and exerts a sustained inhibitory effect on histamine reactions. Unlike antihistamines, Ketotifen has marked anti-anaphylactic properties and can be as effective as mast cell stabilizers in long-term asthma management. However, it does not abort established asthma attacks and may take several weeks for its prophylactic activity to be fully established.

Dosage & Administrations of Ketomar Syrup

• Adults: 1 mg twice daily with food. In severe cases, the dose may be increased to 2 mg twice daily.
• Children above 3 years: 1 mg twice daily with food. Start with 0.5 to 1 mg at night for the first few days if sedation is a concern.
• Elderly: Same as adult dose or as directed by a physician.
• Take this medicine as directed by your doctor.
• Swallow the tablets whole with water.
• It can be taken with or without food but try to take it at the same time each day.

Overdose Effects:

Overdosage may cause confusion, drowsiness, headache, bradycardia, and respiratory depression. Recommended treatments include gastric lavage or emesis and general supportive care.

Interaction

• Potentiation: Ketomar may enhance the effects of sedatives, hypnotics, antihistamines, and alcohol.
• Platelet Count: A reversible fall in platelet count has been observed in patients taking Ketomar with oral antidiabetic agents. It is suggested to avoid this combination.

Contraindications

• Combination with Oral Antidiabetics: Avoid due to potential reversible fall in platelet count.
• Pregnancy and Lactation: Not recommended due to lack of evidence on teratogenic effects.

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Pregnancy: Not recommended due to insufficient evidence of safety.
• Lactation: Not recommended for the same reasons.

Precautions & Warnings

• Continue previous asthma treatment for at least two weeks when starting Ketomar to avoid exacerbation.
• Be cautious in steroid-dependent patients.
• Supplement Ketomar with specific antimicrobial therapy if needed.
• Patients may experience impaired reactions and should avoid driving or operating machinery initially.
• Avoid alcoholic drinks due to potentiation effects.
• Before taking Ketomar, inform your doctor if you have epilepsy or diabetes, as these conditions may require adjustments to your treatment. Always provide a list of all medications you are currently taking to your doctor, as some may interact with Ketomar and affect its efficacy or safety.
